On a bench in Hibiya Park
A sad letter S traced in snow and love
No one knows where the blue fish is swimming
The sky reflects the houses of a frozen block
In my head, the Latin letters of a beloved’s name
A discarded tangerine peel
A red tongue laughing at itself

Sobo [Jap. for ‘grandmother’] is inspired by Japanese minimalism, the philosophy of butoh, and cultural tropicalism. We present artists united by the idea of blending languages, time travel, creating anachronisms and non-linear temporal spaces, and escaping into distant cultures and worlds—both imaginary and real.
Sobo searches for ways to maintain dialogue in the face of a crumbling language, methods for micro-research of flickering forms and ideas, and ways to catch the fish trembling inside our belly.
